timer:tc - accuracy/granularity

I was unable to find a statement in the timer:tc documentation around 
the granularity guarantees provided on different platforms. Can someone 
help me out? Can someone point me at what the OS level calls used are, 
so I can check for guarantees on those on the platforms I care 
(Sol/x86/AMD, Linux/RH3/x86, MacOSX)?

What is your experience measuring latency in the range of 100 to 500 
usec using timer:tc?
