This is a bit of a harsh thing to say. If there was really a need from 
Erlang users, then perhaps the erlyvideo project would have received 
more patches.

It can be guessed that the majority of the erlyvideo users aren't Erlang 
developers and therefore wouldn't contribute code back. So the decision 
to make it closed source makes sense.

Now if one day there's a new need for an open source media server 
written in Erlang, surely alternatives will come out and Erlyvideo might 
want to open source it again. But there's no evidence that this will 
happen anytime soon.

I'm all for open source personally, but it's no silver bullet.
