[erlang-questions] Short Names vs. Long Names

Just wondering about the distinction between short-name nodes and long-name nodes.  You must use one or the other, but never the twain should mix.

 

Is this distinction — having the two different ways to name nodes — by design or an accident of history.  If the former, can someone explain?
