TCP stack throughput

I suppose I could try rewriting the gateway/load balancer in C... I  
think I'll look at the Erlang TCP stack code first.

It's not possible for me to use persistent connections in this case  
as all the gateway is doing is handing out host/port pairs for  
clients to reconnect to.
