Yes I suppose I shall have to investigate using -Dlocal as a compiler 
option.  There is a note in that header file pertaining to compilers 
not finding static variables.

-Dlocal ?  What a wonderful macro name.  I'm sure nobody would ever use 
a C variable named local for anything but this purpose.
