Nah, one can create some damn fine GUIs with Java and
Web Start allows the uncomplicated deployment of these apps
from a web server to a user's box. 
In that aspect Java is better than its reputation,
it really improved the last years.
Of course it helped that GHz boxes with 256 MB RAM and more
are what you get today.
