this layered approach is a good idea. Even if it's not the same thing, it might be at least instructive to read about QNX's Photon microGUI(tm) architecture at http://www.qnx.com/developer/docs/momentics_nc_docs/photon/prog_guide/architecture.html

This is the architecture I was thinking about to implement.
