using terminal control codes

hi all,

I tried to use terminal control codes (ANSI/VT100) to beautify the screen output, but it doesn't work. Would it be difficult to make it work? Where should I begin? 

I know that in the general case this would require a lot of fiddling with termcap and friends, but for now I'd only want to play with what works on my screen.
