I'm not sure if you were complaining about snapshots, but R8B works
fine for me here:

     $ uname -srm
     NetBSD 1.5.3_ALPHA i386
     $ erl
     Erlang (BEAM) emulator version 5.1 [source]

     Eshell V5.1  (abort with ^G)
     1> 3.14e+400.
     ** 1: illegal float **
