[erlang-questions] Pros and Cons OTP Release

Hi, 

What are the pros and cons of packaging an Erlang program as an OTP release? I notice that some of the erlang programs use OTP release (Riak), while others use an augmented erlang install with custom scripts (Ejabberd, RabbitMQ).
