NIFs for ASN.1

Are there any specific reasons to the continued use of port drivers for
ASN.1 than NIFs? Isn't NIFs are more suitable for C level encoding/decoding
of ASN.1 PDUs?

I am using ASN.1 in SS7 and CDR.
