Tom Preston-Warner's presentation from this year's Palo Alto Erlang  
Factory might shed some light on reverse engineering Erlang's wire  
protocol:

The slide at the end about BERT and BERT-RPC look promising but I'm  
not sure if any work was done to make it a reality.
