There is one reason to use Erlang in preference to C++, etc.

Commercial advantage.

If you use a me-too technology you will get a me-too result.

 "Hey let's make a world-beating kick-arse inovative product using the same
  technology as everybody else and that all the consultants reccomend"

 You should use Erlang because it gives you commercial advantage. 

 Many people who read and post to this list have done exactly that and have successful
companies because they have good product ideas and a good technology and a bit of luck.

You can kill any good idea with a ten-pack of consultants and Java or C++
