io:format works poorly with Red Hat 9

Peter,

This has always been this way on all platforms I have used.
I use to_erl daily and I know, I'm quite used to it.  I have
always assumed that "the pipe filled up".  I'm sure there is
a solution but it never bothered me enough to look into it.
