How to stop erl vm starting with run_erl

I try

echo "init:stop()." | to_erl mypipe

this works sometimes and sometimes not.

Example of doing it 3 times, the logs are:

Eshell V12.0.2  (abort with ^G)
1>    1>    1>    1> init:stop().
ok
2>
