If I saw the ^ character (ASCII caret) being used in any programming
language and didn't understand why, I would search using the term
"caret".

For instance, the search phrase "python caret character" immediately
finds relevant web pages.

Documented correctly. the phrase "erlang caret character" would do the same.

^ is pretty much universally known as "ASCII caret" or "ASCII circumflex".
