If someone gets inside the network, they can read the cookie easily. 
It's not a security protection, it's there to allow separating clusters.

Erlang itself does not come with any safeguards; someone gets in, you're 
dead.

Not trying to raise an alarm there, it's not necessarily a bad thing, it 
depends entirely on your use case.
