regarding data format using gen_tcp interface

Hi,
 
using gen_tcp interfacer we can send and receive data 
as 'list' or 'binary' 
 
when i send and receive data between winsock and gen_tcp 
winsock -----TCP/IP------ gen_tcp   
what the data format i should send like list or binary, 
 
and if i use data transmission in 'active mode' 
can i elemenate the use of gen_tcp:recv/N
