They are not synonymous on my Solaris 2.9 box either.  They don't
even have the same number of arguments.

The only variation I'm aware of between UNIX systems is whether
the "suffix" argument basename(1) is a literal string or an expr(1)-style
pattern (internationalised basic regular expression).
