How To Start and Stop an user Application in erlang

Hi,

we have a utility to start an application like

application:start(sasl).

I have my applicaiton(i have not made a release yet
for my applicaiton )

can i make use of 
applicaiton:start(myapp).
application:stop(myapp).

what should i do to make use of this utility
