we used to use a thing called 3dfs back in the early 90's that let
you do that.  that is, if you wanted an old version of /home/garry/.profile,
you'd just go to (something like) /2002-12-21/home/garry/.profile.
you could edit it, diff it, etc.  very, very, nice.
