I see it the same way. Mailing lists have the huge advantage that new
messages are "pushed" into my mailbox. By using a forum I have to scan
the forum for new messages.

On a larger scale I can subscribe to many mailing lists and I can view
them in my mail client. Doing this with many forums is cumbersome.
