You are right. I tried again and can confirm the same behaviour as you
reported - every backspace repeats the previous command:
erl
Erlang/OTP 21 [erts-10.3.4] [source] [64-bit] [smp:20:20] [ds:20:20:10]
[async-threads:1] [hipe] [dtrace]
Eshell V10.3.4 (abort with ^G)
1> 42+42.
84
(search)`': 42+42.42+42.42+42.42+42.42+42.42+42.42+42.
Just upgraded to 21.3.6 and still seeing the same incorrect behaviour.
