[erlang-questions] Longnames vs. shortnames (yet again)

Hello,

When I should use longnames and when I should use shortnames?

net_kernel:create_hostpart/2 allows me to understand the difference in
behavior, but I can't understand what is the purpose to have both
longnames and shortnames. I suppose that there are different use-cases
for longnames and shortnames. Unfortunately, Erlang documentation lacks
clear explanation here.
