One thing, I have a fork of erlang_protobuffs which fixes a minor
issue with capitalized entries in the .proto file here

https://github.com/openx/erlang_protobuffs

It sort of hit me in production which sucked, but other than that
I've been using one or another form of erlang_protobuffs for some
time.

I'll put a pull request into the basho version since it's probably
useful to others.
