Solaris: Can't set long node name!

On my default installs of Solaris 10 simply running 'erl -name foo'
doesn't work. I know that I can tune things with settings in an
inetrc file(*) and I'm looking at that now but I wonder what others
have found works best.

This is what I get:

     $ erl -name foo
     {error_logger,{{2009,7,20},{18,52,13}},"Can't set long node name!\nPlease check your configuration\n",[]}

I wonder whether reporting with error_logger is the right thing to do here too.
