For the sake of completeness the closest equivalent to /etc/*release*  
that I'm aware on Mac OS X is /System/Library/CoreServices/ 
SystemVersion.plist. To get a nice text version of that run:

%  sw_vers
ProductName:	Mac OS X
ProductVersion:	10.5.4
BuildVersion:	9E17
