[erlang-questions] why erlang emulator can't display gui when calling functions like app:start()?

hi list,
   I run a erlang instance on a CentOS-5, x86 dual core machine. when
I called app:start(), the window hasnot popped , and program hanged at
that time.
  who can tell me how to solve it, I am a newbie .
