Well, 'tis bad form to reply to oneself, but here goes anyway.

I just found the ERL.INI file in the erts/bin folder, and editing that to
reflect my extracted release tar location does the trick.  I take it
the INI file isn't documented anywhere?  Or have I not been looking
hard enough?
