[erlang-questions] Realistic uses cases for new driver threads and the driver timer

I would like to explain to the readers why they may want to use the  
new driver threads and the driver timer. I can show them how but I  
can't come up with the why.

I would appreciate example use cases for each and suggestions for a  
simple but realistic example or two.
