i searched for a clearification of your statement ''Automake is supposed 
to generate Makefiles that do not require GNU Make''. the quote was the 
closest i came to such a clearification.

your subsequent reply was much clearer.

    EPO guidelines 1978: "If the contribution to the known art resides
