Great, I see now that it works with a proper R9C installation of erlang.

(I posted after trying to compile with my linux installation,
  a Gentoo ebuild labelled "dev-lang/erlang 9c-r1".
  Judging from the version of erts, 5.2.3.3, this is *not* R9C.)
