Um, well, yes and no.

You can always run the compiler from the command line, and use some 
other editor (vi, or even some of the Windows editors) to jump to 
erroneous lines.

Problem is: Mozart tutorials tend to assume you're living in emacs. Some 
interesting tools were available just for the emacs environment and 
wouldn't work standalone.
Nothing serious, actually - you can always work around that. But every 
workaround takes an extra hour. Or an extra day. After several 
repetitions of this, the enthusiasm is used up and alternatives start to 
look more interesting...
