reading internally formatted disk logs

I have a disk log opened with the following params:
{type, halt}
{format, internal}

While the log is still open, I can write to terms to it, and read them using
disk_log:chunk - but once the log is closed, there seems to be no way of
reading from it. If I try disk_log:chunk after closing the log, I get
{error, no_such_log}. So how does one read an internally formatted log once
it has been closed??
