linking problems while trying to call erlang from C

I am having linking problems using the *.rpm binary
distribution of erlang for RedHat Linux.

I am trying to link against liberl_interface.a and
I can't get any symbols to resolve.

I used the 'nm' command to spit out the symbol names
and it seems as if everything is ok.
