Mea culpa.

In my defense, when I added those macros four years ago,
xmerl was still only a proof of concept hack. (:

(The committer was Luke Gorrie, but that was just because it was
non-trivial back then to use CVS/SSH from behind Ericsson's
firewalls. No blame should fall on poor Luke.)
